Question: What if you could experience some of the finest scenery in the world up close and personal at a pace many times quicker than hiking? This would mean that in 4 or 5 days you could cover hundreds of miles of mountain wilderness that only mountain goats and sheep get to see on a regular basis. Because in a realm that was previously only accessible by horseback the bicycle is beginning to take the lead.
Back-country mountain biking is one of the fastest-growing, experiential tours in the travel business. In fact there is a whole industry that has sprung up to equip this expanding sport featuring rugged outerwear, sleeping bags, protective gear and panniers, or bike backs. Because if you are going up into the Rocky Mountains for 4 to 6 days you want to be warm and well-equipped.
There are many types of mountain bike excursions from the fully-guided bike tours to the free-wheeling adventures where the client is equipped and given a whole area to explore. Some of the most amazing tours include viewing the wildlife in a certain area like grizzly bears and mountain sheep. Trained guides can place you within camera reach of some of the most beautiful animals in the world while maintaining a safe distance. Fishing in remote lakes is another amazing experience as you hook large trout in areas that rarely see a fishing lure.
For the extreme bikers there are many other amazing trips like heli-biking and the thrill of being delivered to a high mountain lake by floatplane. The adventurers can spend a few days fishing before making their way down the mountain. Helicopters can place the bikers up past the treeline where they can follow the steep paths back down to base camp.
Week and multi-week tours see bikers delivered to the remote spots by shuttles that will pick them up again after the area has been visited and take them to another spot a hundred miles long the mountain range. With tours such as these the long days of biking are concluded in luxurious accommodations with fine dining. In most cases the bikes and equipment are supplied but serious mountain bikers can bring their own gear: bikes, padding and panniers.
Some of the most popular mountain bike experiences happen around popular ski areas. Where there are lifts to whisk the bikers and gear up the mountain. Since there are ski trails already laid out the bikers can traverse many different types of downhill obstacles and enjoy a hearty nightlife in the ski lodges and villages below.
